The Grass is Greener | Harrisburg PA Family Photographer

"THE GRASS IS GREENER WHERE YOU WATER IT"

Not sure who said it, but if you're ever looking for wise words, look no further. I do best when I find short and sweet mantras to help remind me of simple truths that help focus my mental energy in the right direction and that's what this saying is for me. This family not only has this very quote hanging in their home (quote twins!!!), they're living proof that it's true. And ya know what? I think they've got the greenest grass in all of Central PA. Especially in the age of social media, it's so easy to look into other people's lives and covet what they have. What's not easy is remembering that behind every picture-perfect smile is a story. And most likely it's a story that includes some sort of struggle and hard work in addition to the shiny version of happy we get to see from the outside. It's good for me to remember that everyone has to work to get what they want, even if the instagram post doesn't talk about it.

Basically, your neighbors' grass is green FOR A REASON. And sitting around wishing yours were green isn't going to change a thing.

You've gotta water it! You've gotta do something. Anything.

For me, on this busy day of motherhood/entreprenuership, that something is blogging this session that's been so patiently sitting on my hard drive for months and months. (How did I let that happen?! I mean, this family is just outta this world amazing in a million ways. And this session makes me smile so big!) No, this post won't change the world or turn me into the biggest, baddest, most famous photographer in the world, but it's something. And that's good enough for now! :)

Interested in seeing your family on my blog several months after our session? (Just kidding! Or am I?) CONTACT ME and we'll get started chatting about all the deets! And get the scoop on my family work HERE while you're at it!

No words | Camp Hill PA Family Photographer

I think I've been putting off this blog post for so long because I felt like I'd never find the right words to do justice to the love of these people and to how honored it has been to document their family. So even though I loved this session (both while shooting it and also the end results!), it has been sitting on my computer waiting for me to blog it for MONTHS. How terrible!!

Today I finally decided that the right words aren't going to come to me. Maybe because I'm too tired from doing the mom thing or maybe because there just aren't any words that will actually ever be good enough. If you know this family, you know what I mean.

So, no more words. I'll let the photos do the talking... <3

I know it seems like people are always saying “This might just be my favorite session ever!” And while I find myself starting to type that all the time, I always have to delete it because I start to worry that I’ll make someone else feel bad. Like, if THIS one is my favorite session, what about the one I just did last week? Are they going to think I don’t like them anymore? And does me picking favorites make this some kind of dumb competition for my love? Because I can’t have that! No way. Not gonna do it. Can’t have a favorite. Won’t have a favorite!

I mean, truth be told, I realize that no one else really cares that much, but I do. And I’d like to be clear: I love all my clients and all my sessions for different reasons. There is not one single session that’s exactly like the other, so it’s easy to love them all.

This one, for example, took place in Perry County where I grew up. I often get teased for being from such a rural location, but I’m so Perry Country proud that I don’t ever care!!! Being here and shooting this session made me nostalgic for my childhood. It was so gorgeous. The family was so humble and kind and loving. The kids were free to run and play and be free. IT WAS AMAZING. It almost made me want to up and move my family to the country.

Almost. When I remembered that we had to drive AT LEAST 30 minutes, if not 45, just to go grocery shopping as a kid, I decided that I’d just like to do more sessions in good ol’ PeCo so I can soak up the country family goodness while I’m there and then go back to my 10 minute grocery commute (that still feels so long some days!).

Anyway...  you won’t catch me saying that this is my favorite session ever, but I absolutely WILL say that I 110% loved every second of this family session and totally adore these people!

Do you live in Perry County, too? PLEASE HIRE ME to photograph your family in your home! Do you live somewhere other than Perry County? It’s ok. PLEASE HIRE ME to photographer your family in your home... I love where I grew up, but I love lots of other places too. :)

Just Relax | Carlisle PA Family Photographer

So here's the thing about getting family photos taken - it's a big deal! As a photographer it's easy for me to forget that YOU, my families, don't do this every single day. That having to figure out what to wear is hard and that because you haven't done this a zillion times already, you are stressed. You worry that the kids won't cooperate and that the pictures will be ruined and if they're ruined... well too bad because it's not like you'll be doing this again in a week or two. Family photos are an investment which means you really need to make each session count!

Now, as the photographer I know that the really good photogs can get beautiful images no matter what kids are throwing at them. I know that outfits matter, but not THAT THAT much... it's not essential that everyone be in the same 3 colors in order to look good together. But you don't know those things like I know those things.

So when we got our family photos taken recently, there was a little of this, a little of that. I waited til the last minute to figure out our outfits and wasn't 100% in love, but also didn't have the time/energy to rearrange them over and over. The kids were very tired and had had a busy day. I was worried about whether or not they'd cooperate. I was hungry. Let's just say it's not like I perfectly set myself up for success.

Except I did.

Because I chose a photographer to document our family that I knew could handle anything. I trusted her and her vision and her talent. Before the session it was my job to be in charge of the kids clothes, behavior, etc... but once we got there, I was practically off duty! Rather than micromanage them, I let go and decided I was going to be delighted by those little rascals no matter what. Photo sessions really truly can be fun for kids, but not if their parents are telling them no repeatedly while the photographer is telling them to do something fun.

It's not hard to work with a happy kid even if they're not technically following all the directions perfectly. The photos of them will still look amazing. Stressed out, anxious, annoyed parents though? Ain't nothing making them look good!!

This mini session is a perfect example of parents who enjoyed their kiddo and each other rather than letting the stress take over. And it's the reason nearly every single shot from their session was a keeper!!

Afterward | Carlisle PA Family Photographer

What do you do with your photos after your session? Let me guess...

1. you get the gallery and look at it 100 times the first day.
2. you share it with your friends and family
3. you change your profile picture
4. you talk about, maybe even obsess about, the ones you like the most
5. you say you're going to order prints
6. you get too busy and don't order prints right away
7. you kinda forget about the photos...
8. a year later they come up in your timehop or FB memories and you start the process alllll over again

I know how it happens. I get it. I've done it. I actually do it all the time... but I'm working on getting better! So, can I make a suggestion?

Order 1 or 2 (or 3!) prints right away. Like same day! You can always order more, but don't feel like you have to wait to place one huge big order. I bet you can find a free shipping code somewhere so it really truly isn't worth it to hold off. Give yourself the gift of seeing your beautiful family every time you walk into the dining room, living room, hallway whatever.

Then make a quick little coffee table style book of all the photos from the session. Yes, I know you want to make an album for each year and so really you should wait til the end of the year and put these photos in with the rest of them... except no you shouldn't. I mean, you can do BOTH. But it's really quick to just drop all the photos from one session into a book and have it over and done with.

Printed pictures are enjoyed 10 million gajillion times more than photos on a device. In 2 quick steps you can have printed photos around your house right away. Maybe you'll get around to more ambitious photo projects later, but there's no sense in hiding the pics away on the cloud while you're waiting for that to happen.

Now take a look at this gorgeous family's mini session and just try to tell me you wouldn't look at a book of these pics with a big ol smile on your face!!!
