A Happy Heart

When I first started as a photographer I was really excited, really insecure, really really hard on myself and really unsure of what exactly I wanted to do. I created from a place of pure joy (it was so fun!!!), but also from a place of wanting to do what other people wanted. I thought less about what I wanted to create and more about what I thought other people would like.

I imagine it’s a normal place to start from so I don’t begrudge my start, but I tell ya what: I’m glad I’m beyond that!!! It’s such a hard place to be. Aside from the fact that you’re always chasing approval from others, you’re also always threatened by other people. It feels like every other person taking photos is your direct competition. You worry that if your clients see what that person is doing, they’ll ditch you for the better option. You’re possessive of every idea you have and jealous of every idea other people have.

IT’S EXHAUSTING!!!

One of my first examples of “there’s room for all of us to be successful” is this kind, talented, gorgeous lady. She was my friend, my supporter, my cheerleader - my first ever photo friend who didn’t seem to be bothered by the fact that I was a photographer too. When someone asked me if it was hard being friends with my competition, I honestly couldn’t even answer the question. Because she wasn’t my competition. We were just two people in it together. Both of us wanting the best for ourselves and for the other person. Turns out a little mutual respect can really go a long way!!!

Having other photographers as my colleagues and not my competition has paved a path for so much growth, but most importantly, peace of mind. Whether or not my work is better for having these people on my side (it is!), my heart is happier. And that’s what I care about most anyway!

Erin, thank you for making my heart happy when we’re behind the camera together and most certainly when you’re in front of my camera with your adorable family. I just adore you!!!

Unconditional Puppy Love

“The world would be a nicer place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog.” - M.K. Clinton

In case you don’t happen to watch my instagram stories that are filled with more photos of my cat than my kids, I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’M AN ANIMAL LOVER. Like a big time animal lover. We currently have a cat, a dog, a fish and a snail and I love them all dearly. Tito is the only insta-celebrity because our dog Rocko, isn’t comfortable in front of the camera so I give him a pass. (Of course, he still manages to get his furry little butt in most photos I’m trying to take of the kids, but that’s a post for another day!)

ANYWAY! All this to say…. Pet loving families are welcome here!

Especially cute families who love one another, laugh even when things don’t go according to plan, roll with the punches and prioritize the experience of being together over the so-called perfect photo. Incidentally, people who show up with this type of attitude always end up with better-than-perfect photos!

I’d love to give you your own version of better-than-perfect photos. CONTACT ME here on my website, read more about my approach to family photos HERE or go scroll through my work on instagram - be on the lookout for Tito! :)

The Strength of Women

I’ve always been on the “women are amazing” train. Mostly because I’m a woman and I want to believe it about myself, but also because HOLY COW have you seen what women do!? To summarize: everything.

Being part of a mini maternity session for the insanely sweet, funny, talented, STRONGER THAN STRONG Tina was an honor. If you are lucky enough to know Tina and her story, you know that she’s an inspiring example of love and strength. If you don’t know Tina and her story, make sure you’re ready for sad, happy and inspired tears when you get into it… just bring your tissues, ok?!

Tina, her husband and her daughter will welcome their newest family member this September with the help of their generous surrogate, Lindsay. Seeing these two women together was very powerful and moving. I’m in awe of them both!

And so thankful to be reminded that there truly is still so much good in the world.

This mini session will always be so special to me!!

If you missed out on my Magic Hour Minis, but still want to work together, keep your eyes peeled for my End of Year Mini sessions coming up. You can join my mailing list to get the dates before they’re public. Click here to sign up!

And It Was All Yellow

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah they were all yellow

I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called "Yellow"

So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah, your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know, you know I love you so
You know I love you so

-Coldplay

Those are not my words, but when I read them this session came into my head and I couldn’t think of any better words to pair with this beautiful family. They are so madly in love with their baby boy and I am so grateful to have gotten the chance to be a witness to it this summer.

A Good and Perfect Gift

I’ve said it before, but only because it’s so true. Being welcomed into the sweet newborn bubble is one of the best perks that comes with this job. When parents are still figuring things out and not letting just anyone through their doors quite yet, I get to come in and soak it alllllll up. The snuggles and the laughs and the questioning looks of “is this normal” and the yawns that come from being up all night and the “can you get me some water, I’m dying of thirst!!!” that comes with nursing and the dividing up the tasks between spouses as they figure out a system - I get to see it all. AND I LOVE IT.

Having gone through those first days 3 times with my own kids and having those kids grow up (against my strict orders to stay babies forever!!!), I both remember it like it was yesterday and also can’t believe I ever lived like that!!!

My morning with this new family of 3 (sorry Milo. I meant 4!!!) was so much fun. It was equal parts sweet and funny and tender. It truly felt like being with old friends even though it was our very first time meeting!! I’m so thankful for the opportunity to document this time of change in their lives. What a gift!

I can this for you too, by the way. CONTACT ME (here) to chat details and put something on the calendar :)
