Do you find yourself taking a gazillion pictures of your kids? Don't lie, I know you do :) Those kiddos are too stinkin' cute not to right??! BUT do you also find yourself wishing you could figure out the secret to getting awesome pictures of your kids just like those hip west coast mom bloggers? It's ok... I do too. There are a lot of factors that go into those amazing photos and there are certainly some that we can't do anything about (I'm looking at you eternally long PA winter!). The good news is that there are also lots of things you CAN do to improve the photos you take of your kids. I'm working on a little something I can offer to help you mama's out, but for now, I want you think about this...
WHAT STORY DOES YOUR PHOTO TELL?
Every photo you end up keeping on your phone/computer/hard drive should either be INSANELY cute or it should tell a story. You photos should do more than just document what your kids look like. If that's all our photos could do, we'd really only need a handful each year. It is my belief, however, that photos should take you back in time and make you say “Oh my gosh! That's right! Remember when xyz happened!”. Preserving memories is our goal!
When you're ready to take a photo, stop and ask yourself why you're compelled to snap at that moment. Is it because your son proudly dressed himself and put his shorts on backward? Or maybe your daughter went down the slide for the first time on her own? Whatever it is, make sure the photo you take tells that story.
It takes practice, but it's worth it! And I'ma keep working on a little something to teach some techniques that make it a bit easier. Pinky promise.
